HYMN TO ARCHITECTURE is a modular composition that can be extended both in height and width. In HYMN TO ARCHITECTURE, what appears at first sight to be the purely decorative sliding into each other of the various units does have a thoroughly, and even primarily, structural function. The span of the basic module –120 cm – is much too great to be able to bear the weight of books or other heavy objects without bending. By sliding in the various units, the elements are repeatedly given support halfway along to give them extra strength.
