The line between design from a strictly functional perspective and that with a purely conceptual approach is sometimes an extremely fine one. The work of André Verroken is illustrative of this as far as we are concerned in Belgium. He creates a themed basis for his tables and arrives at compositions in which spatial variants are the foundation of his creations. While his first tables possessed a sculptural character, Verroken is now more involved in exploring the possibilities of a spatial framework. His HOMENAJE A EDUARDO CHILLIDA from 1994 is a good example of this.
